A zeal for alternative medicine characterizes the career
of Dr. Steve Marsden, yet when he received his doctorate
in veterinary medicine at the University of Saskatchewan
in 1988, he had no interest in alternative medicine whatsoever.
His chief interest and ambition at that time was the veterinary
treatment of wild and exotic animals. To this end he studied
at the Toronto Metropolitan Zoo and the Calgary Zoo, as
well as founded the Wild and Exotic Animal Medicine Society,
a wildlife rehabilitation service at University of Saskatchewan.
Dr. Marsden went on to found a highly successful small
and exotic animal practice in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada,
and it was there that his interest in alternative medicine
was first sparked. Like most veterinary practitioners, he
was skeptical of alternative medicine, but weary of the
inadequacies of conventional medicine. Intrigued by the
acceptance of homeopathy among British veterinarians, Dr.
Marsden began to try it on his patients. Two years of patient
experimentation later, and he was able to see homeopathy
succeed where conventional treatments had failed.
After witnessing the effectiveness of homeopathy, Dr. Marsden
resolved to get additional training. He wanted to become
as competent and confident with alternative medicine as
he was with conventional medicine, and in as many disciplines
as possible. To this end, he sold his practice and enrolled
the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland,
Oregon. Five years later, Dr. Marsden had obtained a doctorate
in Naturopathic medicine, a Master's of Science in Oriental
Medicine, his licensure in acupuncture and his diplomate
status in Chinese herbology. Today, Dr. Marsden continues to receive fresh new ideas
on the practice of alternative veterinary medicine by continuing
to practice on people. In turn, his effectiveness as an
acupuncturist and naturopathic physician is augmented by
his experience treating serious disease in animals using
nothing but alternative medicine.
In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Marsden lectures
at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine on integrative
medicine, and across Canada and the United States on the
practice of holistic veterinary medicine. He also travels
regularly to China and Tibet to further his expertise.
