David McCluggage runs a holistic veterinary practice in Longmont, Colorado. He has been practicing veterinary medicine since 1981, when he graduated from Colorado State University. He has emphasized holistic care since 1991. His practice now includes a variety of different companion animals, mostly dogs, cats and birds, with the occasional large animal.

Before moving in the direction of holistic medicine he had been a nationally recognized expert in avian medicine. He is a past President of the Association of Avian Veterinarians (A.A.V.) and past chairman of the Editorial Committee of A.A.V. He was an Alternate Delegate to the American Veterinary Medical Association's House of Delegates. He has been on the Board of Directors for the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (A.H.V.M.A.), and was the chairman of the Publications Committee of the A.H.V.M.A. and Managing Editor of the Journal of the A.H.V.M.A. He recently completed a book on the holistic care of birds. He has taken advanced training in homeopathy from the Academy of Veterinary Homeopathy, acupuncture from the International Veterinary Medical Society (I.V.A.S.), and Chinese Herbal Medicine from I.V.A.S. He is an I.V.A.S. Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist. He was a columnist for Natural Pet Magazine, until it stopped publishing, and is on the Board of Directors of the Natural Pet Products Association. His primary areas of interest are in nutrition and nutraceutical medicines, and has written and lectured extensively on these subjects. He is a partner in the Veterinary Institute of Integrative Medicine, an association of doctors dedicated to educating the veterinary medical field and the public on the use of holistic medicine.
