UROGENITAL

UTERINE INFECTION

Species affected: Dogs (rare in Cats)
Background: In dogs, it is often part of a false pregnancy, and occurs a few weeks after estrus.
Symptoms: Simple infection will have a purulent discharge often accompanied by a characteristic odor, fever, malaise, and polydipsia and polyuria. Pyometra occurs in dogs with or without an infection present. When the cervix is closed, pus builds up inside the closed uterus. When the cervix is open, there is an abundant vaginal discharge. Classic symptoms for dogs include polydipsia and polyuria, progressively worsening, vomiting, depression, fever and then hypothermia, collapse, shock and eventually death if surgical intervention is not in time.
Diagnostics: Physical examination, blood work and smears made from the discharges.
Special Notes: Yeast infections can complicate the treatments.
Principles for Supplementation:
Natural treatment involves clearing bacterial infections, restoring normal bacterial flora, and supporting the immune system. Surgery may still be required.
